If you cannot have a steady thickness planer and you can have only a portable one , this Dewalt is a very top choice . Of course you may have a steady planer and have also this portable one , for your outdoors wood projects and stuff .
I have only portable ones in my apartment and i go to carpenter friends for more bigger planning situations . You can do “magic” with a good portable planer .
This Dewalt has maximum 2mm planning depth which you may adjust of course and a very reliable motor , but ok we’re talking for Dewalt in here .
It’s a “beast” concerning power and easiness of “eating” wood’s “flesh” and the word overheating is unknown .
It cuts easy , smooth and cen be used from anyone no matter his/hers experience . Adjust your dust collector and you’ll need no more .

A very nice alternative and it has half the money of the DEWALT is this SKIL 6.5 amp corder thickness planer .
It’s also cuts up to 2mm depth and it has a 82mm planing width capacity . It’s super light and you won’t miss power for your planing job . The general quality is Skill of course .

The WEN 15-Amp 13-Inch Spiral Benchtop Thickness Planer .
In the mid range of money ( 300$ – 400$ ) this WEN thickness planer is a very wise choice , in order to have a spiral planer without spending much .
The cast iron surface and the well manufactured construction is welcomed and with this you can planer 6″ thickness wooden boards and 13″ of width .
It doesn’t make much noise and the dust collector is super efficient . You can modify it easily if you like to place carbide blades or whatever .
It works very smoothly and you “buy more machine than you paid for” .

The DEWALT Thickness Planer , Two Speed , 13-inch , (DW735X) .
This is the legendary 735 Dewalt thickness planer and for many it’s the best portable planer . I’ve worked with it , in a carpener friend i have and i can say , it’s a very capable and impressive planer .
Ok , this a Dewalt heavy – duty power machine having the known Dewalt quality and prestige , but it’s not only that .
The thing that impressed me is that even if you’re planing a hard type of wood and you set it to the finish mode , it makes the surface extremely smooth and perfect .
You don’t need anything more , sanding et.c . You’re ok to start your finishing process . This is VERY good and it’s a sign that this is a “serious” machine .

The range of the wood’s thickness is from 1/16″( very impressive ) – 6″ and the width is 13″ . It isn’t a light machine(92pounds) but that means , good construction and i personally like it .
If you’re a beginner to all this woodwokring power machinery , you’ll set and adjust very easy and you’ll see how the two speed motor will comfort you big .
It’s not randomly the first choice from many professionals , cabinet makers and carpenters who want , power , portabilty and quality without spending much for a thickness planer .
*** EXTRA : If you want to modify and upgrade , your Dewalt 735 straight cutterhead to a helical cutterhead , you can have a 13″ helical cutterhead from FOXBC , which is designed for the 735 .
The two bearing , the carbide inserts , the screws and the T wrenches , are included to the set .
Go to Amazon and take it . It’s a very nice upgrade and it’s in the 300$ money area .
If you don’t want to go far away with your money and you want the same more or less specs with the Dewalt , but with helical cutterhead , this Grizzly Industrial G0940-13″ 2 HP Benchtop Planer With Helical cutterhead , is a very nice alternative .
Even if it has less power(2HP) than the Dewalt , i don’t think that you’ll face planer problems . It’s a ac/dc electric thickness planer and it has the known Grizzly quality in all of its features . It’s kind of a little more expensive than the Dewalt .
