The symmetrical and cylindrical perfection of a wood turning , for a woodworker who has a nice lathe , isn’t a very difficult job and the help for such a power tool is quiet big .
Especially if you like to create your own dowels and other small wood parts , for your bigger plans .
The complete post with FAQ’s and other tips for wood lathe is HERE .
So let me show you some nice lathe machines , i think they’re just fine for even a woodworker with high needs .
I have experience with the first 2( and more cheap ) and the third i’ve seen from a friend carpenter .
The DELTA 46-464 Industrial Midi Lathe .
This Delta Industrial 46-464 Midi-Lathe with an extension is a very nice lathe for less than a 100$ and in some places without shipping .
It needs a little longer time to assemble , but you won’t have any issues for this , but many may find it annoying . Ok , i don’t think it’s a big deal for that kind of money especially .
It’s very solid construction in general ( even the cheaper Delta are good ) and you may need to make some final adjustments to bring it to your preferences . You know to fit it to your ground , line up the extension which is very helpful , et.c .
It slides smoothly , the motor is working well and you won’t have any themes for this 12-1/2″ lathe .

Let’s upgrade to a more advanced 8″ x 13″ lathe from Grizzly , but not spending a fortune .
The Grizzly 13″ Industrial Benchtop Lathe .
The Grizzly Industrial T32536 8″ x 13″ Benchtop Wood Lathe , is a very desirable choice and for many reasons .
It has the well known Grizzly attention to detail and quality and nice features for you , who are you making wooden bowls , or whatever else .
For extra sefety it has a safety paddle with key and the headstock with the tailstock are designed for the best possible grip . The spindle is 3×4″ , the motor is a 1/3HP , but you have to check the electricity needs for your place .
It’s a single phase , 110V lathe . The range of speed is ideal , 750RPM – 3200RPM , as you’ve seen in my extended lathe post .
See more from Amazon and go to buy now it in here .
The strong built and the sturdiness is visible from any angle . The bed is solid and the headstock & tailstock are perfectly aligned and the aluminum job is very fine .
I don’t want to give you a more expensive lathe than this one , which is my last suggestion and i think that it’s ok for the pros too .
This i’ve seen , working to a friend carpenter . It’s the “mother” of the previous one .
It’s a 12″ x 18″ big lathe , with an ideal 3 – gear , RPM range too ( 650RPM – 3800RPM ) and enough heavy-duty quality . It’s an ISO 9001 machine .
You can have it with an extension table and it has a larger motor( 3/4HP ) to turn big wood with easiness , but Grizzly could put the electrical box , above the base .
Thisis also a single phase , 110V lathe .
Quality and attention to details , “overflows“ as usually with the Grizzly machines .
I think you’re fully covered , having one or a combination of the above wood lathes . If you combine them with some nice lathe tools , you’ll be 100% covered and without spending much .
This 8 set of wood turning micro tools( gouges , parting , et.c ) are very nice , with wooden handles and a good quality’s steel alloy . There’re very beautiful , too . They’re great starters .
Make you buying checkings and take it , from Amazon now in here .
I liked this heavy – duty lathe tailstock center from the first time i show it and it’s produced by the Deadwood company . The steel alloy is heavy – duty and can handle almost 30kgr of a woodpiece with no issues .
You can see the quality craftmanship is visible , the accuracy is perfect , the edge is “katana” strong and ready for any hardwood .
Lubricate it with some oil drops and keep it away from water and fluids and you’ll have it for ever .
Get it from Amazon with 20$ easy and now in here .
It’s very solid and it “overflows” heavy – dutiness .
Keep always woodworking and the happiness will follow .
