For all of us , the woodworking “lovers” this so sweet problem , is timeless and captures much time of our thinking . If you have always enough money , to buy any wood material and surface you desire , it’s ok .

Searching for wood gives you “tons” of Happiness .

Searching and finding wood out in nature in its “primitive” pure form , gives you a different type of happiness !!!!!!

And of course i don’t like much to cut trees , they shouldn’t be . If you want to find free wood , by your own powers and maybe supporting from some friends , see what you can do :

Make Long “Relaxing Soul” Walks to Find Wood .

1) Make long walks into the forests .

Whenever i can , i go outside making long discovering walks in the forest , or in my town’s local park , combining my relaxing walks in the nature , with wood “hunt” .

Whatever free and already cut wood piece i see and need for my woodworking projects , i take it .

Of course , always have in your back pocket , a small saw . It helps if this wood piece , isn’t cut completely and needs a little more to be “free” .

If it’s big , i return to my car and take it . Sometimes , i combine my running training with the wood search , but after a while your brain gets very “trained” to this practice and all the times i ‘m in the forest , my eyes “scanning” the area in the “auto mode” .

2) Good friends , carpenters or not , can help .

If you have a friend or someone who his job , has to do with the wooden “world” , you can ask for his permission and take the wood pieces , he doesn’t use and they are going to the recycle .

You’ll be surpised of how many and how big enough wood pieces , you’ll get . If you this friend , is a carpenter , works in a carpenter shop , even better .

3) Forestry agencies , can help you also .

You can go to your local forestry , being very polite wearing your biggest smile and ask the employees , if you can join them some day in the forest , so they can show you , which trees you can cut by yourself , without damaging the ecosystem .

You know with the guidance and licence of the authorities , you can cut some old , or having problems trees , without hurting the environment .

On the contrary , by putting away the “damaged” trees from the forest , you benefit the environment and makind the “reborn“ of it , easier .

Nature has its own ways to reborn when this is needed .

Without any external interfearance , the big forests during the very hot summer months , caught fire by themselves and that was a self protecting mechanism , nature has .

The very unfortunate thing is that with the upcoming appearance of the human beings , this process didn’t remain a self protecting mechanism anymore .

4) Search for raw wood in abandoned log house , or even stone ones , but with wooden roofs .

During your long forest walks and explorations , you can find free and raw wood ( mostly logs ) , from abandoned log houses , mansions and many times in stone houses , which they have wooden roofs .

If you find in your path an abandoned log home and you’re 100% certain that it’s abandoned of course , you can search inside and outside of it and pick many pieces of logs , to use them yourself .

Many times you’ll have the privilige that these logs , wood boards , et.c , will be aging wood , which is a very good thing . The aging wood if it has no bugs – fungi , is a very touch wood .

I’ve made a log chair , a throne type of chair from cypress logs , i’ve picked from an abandoned house like this . In Greece people used and use , the cypress wood very much . It’s king of an “immortal” type of wood with a very long lifetime .

The roof of many of our ancient Monuments and the roof of Parthenon i think , are made from cypress logs and these are made many thousands of years ago .

So the abandoned log homes and many times the abandoned stone homes with wooden roofs , are great places to find raw and free wood .

In these abandoned stone houses , the only wear they have from time is the collapse of their roof , which is from wood , from bamboo type of wood and stuff like that .

All these during time and without any protection , they wear from water , rain and moisture and they collapse , inside the interior .

If you can enter the inside of the stone house( with great attention ) , you’ll be amazed of the logs and other wood you can find .

Keep searching and finding new ways for free and legally , wood “supplies” , to create your woodworking projects .
