What is the Darkest Wood Color ?

What is the darkest wood color is a “puzzle” question in the woodworking activity , but it should not be , even if wood has many color shades , et.c . In here , concerning the darkest wood color , “things” are more clear .

Ebony in all of its varieties ( Nigerian , Macassar , Cameroon , Ceylon ) has the darkest color in wood and this is “crystal” clear without any doubts . Ebony has the darkest color of wood you can find in the entire world and no tree can reach the total dark color of ebony .

Cameroon gives us the biggest amounts of ebony .

You can find dark wood as walnuts , the Burma Blackwood , the African Blackwood(mpingo) , the Wenge wood , but ebony is the “champion” , concerning the absolute darkest wood color , on the planet .

One of the reasons that ebony wood pieces are some expensive and extremely rare to find , is this total darkness . It also has so big density that can sink in water(!) .

We create very elegant and elite woodworking creations from ebony as piano’s keyboards , rifle handles and high class wood sculptures .

Some more Info : different places , different Wood Colors .

The walnuts of the South America haven’t the same color , exactly with the walnuts i have here in my country , Greece .

The oaks in Africa haven’t the same color , tint and color width with the european oaks . The same applies for every wood outhere .

And that’s why we love so much our woodworking hobby and way of life . Because it has endless variety and it is “alive” . The color of the trees , which are the ones of course which give the color to our wood , are affected for so many factors .

These unique factors of the territory you collect your wood , are the ones which give your wood’s color . The tree takes the ingredients of the soil , combined with the water rain , the soil – air moisture , the water of the forest’s sources underground and using the energy of the sun ( the photosynthesis ) , it grows .

Every tree outhere grows with its own way and with its own uniqueness . So that’s why , we have the same trees , but with different color tints , different inside wood “waters” and general differences .

The variety of the color the wood has is from white to black , the whole range of colors .

Usually the “hardwood” has the darkest colors , from the brown to the black . The walnuts , chestnuts , mahogany , but also the pine has dark colors as the Black Forest Pine .

In Africa , in the Southeastern States , in Amazon forests you can find many wood species with very dark colors .

Here in my country ( Greece ) , we haven’t of course all the wood and trees variety but we have many forests with a big range of trees .

We have also soft types of trees and hard types , but because of our warm and specific mediterranean microclimate we haven’t the darker kinds of trees .

Mostly the entire Greece’s area is covered with trees ,which are “tough” to the many months of the year with high temperatures ( almost 6+ months with 30 + celcius ) and the soil we have .

No in here we haven’t the darkest types of the trees if you’d like to supply and as the other types of trees , if you want some , you should order it from other countries .

Are the darkest types of Wood , more Expensive than the other types ?

Yes mostly they are . Usually the darkest types of trees – wood are the more elite than the more open lighted types of wood , so their prices are quite more expensive .

The Chestnuts , Walnuts , Ebony , Mahogany , Cherry tree and many other dark types are considered from people and the woodworkers , as the more expensive you can get .

Of course these higher prices aren’t “caused” only by the color of the wood , but from their unique and specific uniqueness of the properties they have .

You can see some of the expensive wood types in HERE .

And if you want elite properties and uniqueness my friends to give astonishing beauty to your woodworking projects , your wallet will be “lighter” much .

But yes for sure , if you make the desicion to buy any of these darker and expensive types of wood , the result will “justify” you 100% .

Keep working with your woodworking projects and give your selves happiness .
