Is lacquer , Better than Varnish ?

It’s way more toxic than a varnish and if it dries you cannot make corrections in it .

The varnish can be 100% natural if you choose a natural oil based one , it can penetrate deep inside the wood emphasizing its grain and in general it’s easy to apply in every of its versions .

It’s less toxic than the lacquer and more eco – friendly .

Can i Varnish , Over lacquer ?

Usually the lacquer is the absolute last coat you put to your wood , but if you want for a reason to varnish lacquer , you can do it , after the complete drying and cure of the lacquer .

Can you Paint , Over lacquer ?

Its’ not “forbidden” , even if the lacquer is the absolure last coating , but if you choose to paint lacquer , you should be carefull to the paint “bleeding” , because the surface will be very smooth and uniform .

What is Better than lacquer ?

The polyurethane finishes are the most strong finishes , you can have and there are more efficient than the lacquer finish , because literally the polyuethane is liquid plastic , which is very tough .

What is better Polyurethane or Lacquer ?

The most strong film comes from the polyurethane(lacquer isn’t “weak”) , the better looks and faster drying to the lacquer .

Does lacquer , Dry Hard ?

No , the lacquer finish dries fast and it’s ready to further use in a day or two , maximum .

How Long does lacquer take to Harden ?

After a day or maximum two , you can have a fully operational lacquer , and continue your wood project , but if you want the fully cure of the lacquer , you should wait a couple of days more .

There are cases in high moisture places , that lacquer needed even weeks(!!) to fully cure .

Does lacquer , Darken wood ?

No , not darken but providing a yellowish – orange – gold shade to the wood nd maybe if you have a drk type , it should darken it lightly .

Does lacquer , Yellow over time ?

Yes it does , because of the nitrocellulose ingredients .

Is lacquer , Always Shiny ?

Yes it does , if you don’t make any intefearrence , sand it , put another matte element above , et.c .

How can i make my lacquer , Shine Again ?

Yes , you can make a recoat and refresh its shiny – luxury looks .

Is lacquer , Bad for wood ?

No you don’t need to polish , the surface is perfect .

Can i lacquer , Over Old laquer ?

Yes , surely you can and if you make a light sanding you’ll get a nice uniformity , fixing some past errors .

Can you lacquer , Over Old Paint ?

Yes you can , but don’t expect the best uniformity , protection and top result , if you don’t totally remove the old material and do the correct preparation .

How many coats of lacquer , does it take to Seal wood ?

This depends from the type of wood you have and the general condition( how “thirsty” it is ) of your wooden surface , but a couple of layers ( 3 -4 ) would be enough , even for the most difficult cases .

Is lacquer a Good Sealer ?

Yes , it’s a first class durable and strong crust film – sealer , for your surface .

Do you Sand , the Last coat of lacquer ?

Maybe you need to sand very – very lightly , in order to “clean” the errors – micro “trash”, of the finished surface .

How do you Prepare wood , for lacquer ?

1) Clean perfectly your surface from previous finishes , fluids ,acids , et.c .

2) Get your right equipment , according the version of lacquer you’ll use .

3) Sand your wooden surface and try to make a perfect uniform job .

4) Apply your lacquer ( prefere spray ) , let it fully dry before the next coat .

5) Sand lightly if you like and needed , between coats .

6) Make you final layer and let it dry and cure – sit perfectly , as long as it takes .

7) If needed , make corrections with your sandpaper , extremely light .

Does lacquer Requires , Sanding ?

Yes , most of the times if you want ot prepare your surface and have a perfect uniform final result .

Can you Sand , between coats of lacquer ?

Yes , if you like to maximize the adhesion of the next lacquer steps and you should sand very lightly and after the drying of the present coat .

Do i need a Primer for lacquer ?

Yes , most of the times , in order to give the best uniformity you can possible can and then comes the lacquer and sit on it , make the final result perfect .

Do i need a Sanding Sealer , Before lacquer ?

It’s not necessary , but it’s not “forbidden” , also .

Should you Oil wood , Before lacquer ?

Yes , if you like to make a nice bonding with the lacquer elements and the wood’s ones . The oil not only fills – seal – prime wood , but it bonds the wood “world” and the lacquer “world” very good .

Another advantage is that if you have a wood type with many oils and fluids inside , the oil you’ll use before the lacquer will cover these oils and make the applying very easy and uniform .

Can i Apply lacquer , Directly on wood ?

Yes , you can it’s not “forbidden” , but it’s recommended to use an undercoat and smoothen it – make it ready for the lacquer .

How do you Apply lacquer , without brush marks ?

You should use very light applying strength and moves( like “feather” touches ) , have the correct brush for the job , grab less lacquer amount and use the”build” method .

Many thin layers , many times and total drying between these layers .

Is it Better to Brush or Spray lacquer ?

The better uniform result is made with the spray type of lacquer , above a very good and smooth sanded surface .

Can i Apply lacquer with a Roller ?

Yes , you can do it and if you are carefull enough , you can have very good results .

Can you Paint straight , Over lacquered wood ?

No it’s not recommended , because he several type of solvents the lacqeur has will bubble the paint and the result will disastrous .

Can i Brush , Over lacquer ?

No and it’s highly not recommended , because you’ll ruin the perfect uniform and aesthetics final lacquer result .

Is it OK , to Spray lacquer ?

Yes , the spraying lacqeur way , is the best way you can do in order to have the best uniform final coating and get the most benefits of the lacquer finish .

How do you keep lacquer , from Cracking ?

Make thin layers of lacquer , have the appropriate hardener , use the correct primer , try to have your wood project to a less moisture place and let it dry , sit and cure correctly .

This will delay the cracking , but not postpone it for ever . All the crust types of wood finishes are cracking , during time , no matter what .

Lacquer is strong , but not so strong and durable as the polyurethane . The polyurethane is literally liquid plastic and it’s very strong in all the kinds of conditions .

lacquer vs Polyurethane vs Shellac .

Polyurethane is the strongest .

The natural shellac gives a very strong protecting film , but not so strong as the lacquer .

The synthetic shellac can be as strong as the lacquer .

Shellac even if it’s not as fglossy as the lacquer , it provides more natural and warm beautiness to the wood .

Shellac is a resin basically and this gives a warmer beauty , along with strength , protection , et.c .

Lacquer vs Polyurethane , for Cabinets ?

This depends from your needs , having in mind that the most strong and durable finish is the polyurethane one .

The lacquer combines best the strong film with the gloss .

Lacquer vs Polyurethane vs Epoxy .

In here we have a more complex “puzzle” .

The polyurethane is the strongest from all again , but in here we can have a polyurethane epoxy combination which is a very strong plastic with resin finish .

Poyurethane is liquid plastic and win everything concerning the strength .

Epoxy is a resin and can be strong , but not as the polyurethane .

The polyurethane epoxy is a very nice combination of these two “worlds” .

What is better for Kitchen Cabinets , Polyurethane or Lacquer ?

The surface should be perfectly prepared , you should apply your lacquer with a spray and from a distance of 10″ – 20″ inches , making smooth and continuous , applying moves , placing the material as equal as you can .

Is lacquer Good finish for a Desk ?

Yes , certainly is and it’ll upgrade the general appearence of the desk , with its glossy final result , providing a protecting and beautinfull result at the same time .

Of course you should let it dry and cure , perfectly before you act anything on it .

Lacquer or Polyurethane to use Over : Stain Paint ?

This depends from your needs and what finalt finish , you want and required for your wood design and project .

The toughest finish – shield solution , is the polyurethane .

The most glossy result and very strong also , is the lacquer .

Why don’t you combine them , maybe ?

Make an inner film with a nice polyurethane mix to provide the maximum of protection to your wood and then you can gain the amazing gloss from the lacquer .

Is Polyurethane or Lacquer better for Outdoor use ?

The outdoor use requires the most strength you can have .
