If you have a healthy but dirty wood , you’ll only mess things out if you just paint it , as it is . Zero uniformity , zero protection , zero beautiness , zero long lasting result .
We usually do that when we we’re very bored for a reason to deal with a wood piece , or this wood piece doesn’t have much “life” left .
The correct way is top preparation and then a top paint choice and a top topcoat to seal all this .
Can you paint , over Raw wood ?
Yes , you can do it , but you won’t get much of a result in any serious way . Especially if this raw wood has its peel on it , you’ll just make a “hole in the water” .

Yes , you may not sand your wood if you like to have a more rough look , but you’ll need more paint quantities of course and if your wood has serious uniformity issues , your final result won’t be very beautiful .
The applying is harder to a not sanded wood and the drying times will be bigger .
