What wood is Good for Furniture , if you can’t afford the Best types ? ( helpful mindset .)

The types of wood which are good for furniture , i’m sure that has crossed the minds of millions of people and not only in the woodworking area .

You hear many opinions and this is very normal , because every woodworker( pro or not ) outhere has his own and specific preferences of what wood he likes for his furniture .

When you want to create wooden furniture and you don’t have plenty of money , you need to make wise choices , in order to overcome the money issue and have great results at the same time .

If money isn’t a problem you have different approach and you can use the best wood for your furniture , as i’ve written in HERE .

The wood that is good for indoor or outdoor furniture , is the wood that combines the exact and appropriate properties you want , in order to create your desirable wooden furniture , having the best possible quality , without spending a fortune .

The wood that is good for wooden furniture creations , should fulfill the exact specifications and needs of the specific furniture you want to built and its properties , should be targeted to this purpose . A good furniture wood , must do the exact “job” we want to do and have the performance we want to have .

Otherwise the posibilities of bad quality’s furniture , are big .

In general , there is no limitation in the woodworking “planet” . There is no “law” that tells you to do that or to do this .

Especially if you’re an amateur or a hobbyist carpenter , you can do whatever you like and your soul desires , but if you want to have success to your wood projects , there is a path to follow .

You cannot use types of wood which are used mostly for the indoors furniture and creations , for your outdoor projects and expected to last the same time .

You cannot choose to use totally incorrect type of wood for a furniture near a pool , or the salty sea , or for your boat – decking needs and expect 100% success .

You cannot use wood which is very sensitive to wood bugs and fungi , for your inside – outside needs especially in a territory with high moisture and heat ( which they favor bugs ) and expect no problems . Especially if you don’t protect and maintain correctly your construction .

Read in HERE the maintenance tips for your wooden plans .

So as you can see , even if you can do whatever you like , there are some limitations for your wood choices , if you want to create projects that will last long .

What wood is good for the Indoor wooden furniture ?

In here and if you want to avoid the expensive and more luxurius wood , you can use beech ( very common – medium hardness ) , poplar ( “soft” but easy to work ) , some not expensive oak types , maple , acacia , forestry pine , black pine and spruce which are very popular , willow , cypress .

Of course it’s very popular for the cabinet makers to use and combine industrial – engineered wood with real wood , in order to keep the price low .

You can make furniture from engineered wood having as an outside covering – topping , veneer from a more expensive type of wood( chestnut ,walnut , cherry , et.c ) . This is very popular approach and produces , great beautifulness results .

What wood is Good for indoor flooring and more tough “jobs” ?

In here we should use more mechanically strong and resistant to pressure and hits , wood types . The American oak – the white American oak – the Japanese oak and the European oak are very nice for flooring and of course we avoid the expensive chestnuts .

The Cephalonia spruce is very good for flooring , also .

Beech ( US and European ) , maple , ash , birch ( a little more expensive , but very nice ) , are some of the most popular wood we use for flooring and in reasonable prices.

What wood is good for the Outdoor furniture making ?

One very good modified wood you can use for your outdoor furniture and it isn’t very expensive , is the furfurylation modified type of wood . After the wood’s modification you take a way better and stronger wood , which can be used to the outdoors with great results .

See the process in HERE . It’s a green process .

Of course the outdoor wooden furniture is a different “situation” , than the indoors wood . In here the cabinet makers mostly use more expensive wood and especially the tropical types of wood which have specific properties and durability .

If you have a low budget , you should be flexible . The acacia wood is a very nice one , to create your outdoor wood projects and the majority of the furniture you see in the big stores , are made from acacia and they’re very nice .

As more cheap and reasonable solutions you can use , pine ( the chalepian type is very good ) – the oregon pine – spruce – European larix – willow ( the pallets are from willow ) -the pine cone wood – the elm wood ( top for boats , decking , marine uses ) .

You should have in mind that no matter what wood you use for the outdoors , the correct maintenance is absolute necessary .

The oak is “forbitten” for the outdoors ( maybe if it’s impregnated ) and there two types of wood which you should avoid for the outdoors . They bring out color when they get wet .

See in HERE , the details .

Can I create wooden furniture combining Good wood and top class Expensive wood ?

Yes , for sure you can and it’s a very popular method by the cabinet makers , in order to control the price of their creations to reasonable heights .You can also create very beautiful if you combine expensive wood with a lower price one and it isn’t a “bad” thing .

You can have a wooden table with cheaper legs and its upper surface made by mahogany , cherry , US walnut , purple heart , or whatever else you like .

You can combine teak wood which is very capable and resistant to the outdoor conditions , bugs etc , with walnut , ebony maybe or another tropical wood details , in order to fulfill your specific decorative designs .

The cabinet makers very often combine parts of cheaper wood “dressed” with a very good quality veneer for some parts of their furniture and for the rest they use expensive wood . This is a very common method and keeps the price low .

You can do whatever combinations you like and gain all the benefits and the unique – specific properties of the wood types you’ll use .

If you are in the buying phase and you search to by a wooden furniture , you should have in mind some of the criteria in order to choose well made and good quality furniture .

Even if they’re made from solid one piece wood , or they’re made by several ones . See in HERE some basic quality’s criteria and “health” , for your purchases .
