I was born in a small village in the agricultural part in somewhere in the world . My village is a very small one and the people living in this village are mostly farmers , shepherds , some are public officials ( priests , police officers , et.c ) , barbers , and of course some of them are carpenters .
I started to go to school as all the kids in my village , but i went only for a couple of years as many of our village kids .
If i want to be 100% honest with you , i wasn’t very good at school with the lessons and all that , so the decision to abandoned it , came with easiness .
It’s ok , i don’t regret it and i don’t feel undervalued than the other kids with more education .
Not having a University degree doesn’t make you worth , less .
It’s ok , we cannot all be scientists , lawyers , doctors , et.c . On the other hand , i don’t think that my talent was at school .
Since i can remember myself , i was a shepard kid , a farmer kid , a kid to do all the agricultural jobs , but my big love was another one .
Wood and the woodworking activity was , is and always will be , my big love .
Follow your Heart , dream Big , be the hardest worker and see what will happen .
When i had free time from my farmer jobs , i spend them in my friends carpenter shops , helping them as much as i could and many times just watching them creating woodworking plans .
I admired them very much and i “envied” their abilities to take a wooden piece and shape it , to something useful , beautiful and many times work of art .
I aslo admired their abilities they had to measure correct the wooden distances , to mark them with 100% accuracy , to calculate how much wood they will need for the job they had to do and in general for their mind abilities and wisdom .
These abilities my friend carpenters had , scared me a lot and countless times the question of how smart should you be to be a carpenter , has crossed my mind .
No , you don’t have to be a very smart person with university degrees and college knowledge , in order to be a carpenter , average “common” intelligence and perception( if we can make this kind of separations to people) combined with the appropriate willingness , are enough .
I know many elite carpenters with a marvelous career and life , not having any degree at all , but they had the will strength , to learn continuously and evolute , learning from others and their mistakes .
I thought back then in my first carptentry steps , that in order to become a carpenter , you should be a very smart person and that maybe this profession doesn’t suit to the average “common” intelligence , most of humans are .
I know and i’m sure you know too , met carpenters with decades of career behind them , without even having finished school .
I know very successful carpenters with their only mathematics knowledge , the knowledge of the 4 basic math operations ( addition – subtraction – multiplication – divison ) .
No , you don’t have to be smart , to be a carpenter , if you’re a persistance to learn person and you have the “luck” to learn the carpentry profession , near to a very good professional carpenter .
If you go and work for a couple of years near to a professional carpenter and your “thirst” to learn is big , you’ve made “half the job” .
Near to a professional carpenter you’ll learn what you need to learn for the woodworking profession and the most important :
You’ll have your “millions” of mistakes , fixed in real time from this professional carpenter . You know , this knowledge is “carved” , inside you and you’ll never forget it .
This is a “golden ” benefit . Learning through practising , makes theory very easy to learn and lasts for ever .
So if you have only the basic intelligence or maybe the lowest intelligence , if you’re willing to learn and load your “hard – disc” starting from zero , you can be a very nice carpenter .
I’ve written a post concerning the best way to learn carpentry , in HERE .
Yes ok , we cannot all be Albert Einstein , but being smart doesn’t mean that you’ll win in life and achieve your goals . If you don’t do what it takes to achieve your goals , you’ll lose .
So my friends don’t let anyone “put a finger on your face” telling you , that you’re not smart enough and “things” like that . If you set a goal and “die” for this goal , you’ll make it .
Of course this applies exactly the same for the carpentry activity and being or not smart shouldn’t be something to stop you being a carpenter .
And don’t you never forget that when you love truly something , your brain is always “spinning” in how to be more good .
What solutions should you give to problems and in general what can you do to be more good at it .
Keep woodworking and let the happiness makes , you smarter .
