How can I improve my woodworking Skills ?

At last you’ve made your “golden” desicion to enter to one of the most precious hobbies – activities on earth , the woodworking . At last you overcome all your fears and doubts maybe that woodworking is a very touch “situation” and you are in .

And not only you are in , you aren’t a new carpenter anymore and you want to know how can you improve your woodworking skills .

So it’s time to challenge yourself more , think of new woodworking projects and trying to make it into reality , for your joy and happiness or maybe more professional .

Now you want your wood joints to be as perfect as you can , without any wood glue at all , without any nails and screws( if needed ) , you used to create your first wood connections .

Of course to use nails , screws and wood glue isn’t a bad “thing” , but there are more wood joints methods to connect your wood surfaces with the highest stability and being aesthetically nicer .

The way you can improve your woodworking skills , is the same way the humanity used to evolute through history and it’s the unmistakable way of : trying to create more advanced projects – making mistakes – learning from the mistakes and eventually become better .

This process is attached to the humanity’s DNA and it’s working for so many centuries . I think that this is a nature’s “law” for all situations .

If you want to improve and get better you should try in a higher level , make mistakes , learn from them and at the end you’ll improve .

In the woodworking hobby – activity , we have 2 categories , which separates the carpenters who want to improve their skills and become better .

No matter in which category you are , the above method of : trying more advanced projects – make mistakes – learn from them and eventually improve yourself , applies the exact same .

So these 2 categories are :

1) When you have noone to teach you more advanced wooodworking projects and techniques .

2) When you decide to go and learn near to a professional carpenter , or go to woodworking schools , attend seminars , et.c .

So let’s see more detailed these two categories .

1) When you have Noone to teach you .

When you have noone to show you advanced techniques and share with you , his experiences and knowledge , you are “obliged” to do things by your own .

Don’t afraid of this , because you aren’t the only one on this earth and in the woodworking “planet” who is doing things by his own .

So if you don’t have anyone to show you things and you want to evolute and improve your skills , you should start to create more advanced wood plans , by your own .

You should start to experiment yourself with new ways to connect your wooden surfaces and not only with nails , screws and wood glue .

You should try to make your surfaces as smoother as you can to join them perfectly and don’t need to rub with sandpaper , hours and hours . The same applies to your marking skills with your carpenters pencil or whatever you have available .

Mark your wood with “surgical” attention , counting the thickness of the wood board and have your pencils with sharp edge .

You cannot make surgical marking , having your pencil’s edge being fat like a finger . In general you’ll try to make more advanced projects , in order to learn how to be the better “version” of you .

If you want to get some of the best pencils and lead holders , see my suggestions , in HERE .

For sure you’ll need the “golden” help of the web and the countless videos you can find in the youtube platform and the help of a big vatiety of carpenter’s books you can find in libraries and book stores .

The web’s help is “priceless” and if you are all alone , you shouldn’t neglect this help .

In the youtube videos you can find the best carpenters from all over the globe , follow the ones you like by making an easy subscription and start creating more advanced stuff , with their help and guidance .

Of course there are complete woodworking lessons and classes you can attend and extent your knowledge “database” from the easiness of your home .

See in HERE , what is the best way to learn woodworking and why .

The same benefits you can have of course from carpenter’s books and you’ll be amazed of how many excellent books exist outhere , which can lead you step by step and help you improve your skills the most .

2) Going to woodworking schools , or be teached by professionals .

When you’ll decide to go to a woodworking school , attend some seminars or go near to a carpenter , in order to improve your skills , “things” are easier in here .

It’s always easier , when you have a more experienced person to teach you , correct you , share with you little “secrets” and in general supervise your evolution in an area .

It’s always better when you have someone to correct your mistakes the exact moment you make them because the lesson you learn that time , you’ll never forget .

The direct correction of a mistake is “carved” in your brain and no matter how many years will pass , you’ll never forget what you’ve learned .

Of course the same applies if you choose to attend a woodworking school classes , seminars , et.c .

These schools don’t teach only theory , but they have fully equiped woodworking laboratories so you can practice what you’ve learned into the “real life” .

Yes , ok the online woodworking schools don’t have this ability , but you can very easily do what you’ve learned to your personal warehouse and practice there , just fine .

As you may realize , i like very much the web and the youtube way of learning and improving skills , way .

In the youtube , you can have all the carpenters in the world , gathered together so you can choose who you like the most , to follow him and choose him to be your teacher . And i like to have the opportunity to pick from he best , the one who “suits” me .

I’ve written for this online mentality a complete post in HERE .

Anyway , if you want to improve your woodworking skills , for sure you’ll need to challenge yourself by making more advanvced wood plans , than you did till now .

You’ll need to experiment , make mistakes , learn from them and at the end become a better carpenter . No matter if you have teachers to teach , or you are all alone , this process is timeless , it’s working and it’ll make you a better woodworker .

Keep woodworking and let happiness visit you , for good .
