How can you make your Wood Unburnt ?

I think that among the wood’s “enemies” , the most serious one and the one who can vanish our beloved wood , is fire , but we can do some stuff to protect it in a very high grade .

The other “enemies” can be fought by us and we can do many things to protect our wood , but fire is something which if it starts , you can’t do anything .

You can protect your wood from bugs and fungi , by watching and inspect your wood pieces often and if you see something , you can take action with chemicals and stuff .

You can do many things to protect your wood from the external circumstances and the most important maybe : most of the times , you have the appropriate time to identify the problem and act .

Most of the times , wood itself will “warn” you that something is going wrong with it and with the process you are doing to it .

If you try to dry it wrong and not as you should dry it , wood will speak to you with the worse way you expect . With cracks .

Fire is a very tough situation to control , but humans also are trying to find ways to protect the trees and wood from it .

What can you put on wood , to make it Not burn ?

Even if many say that the use of several types of oil ( tung , linseed oil , et.c . ) can reduce and make your wood , not to burn , i think the best elements to put on wood is the appropriate wood paints and retardants , the professionals use as coating to their log houses , constructions, etc .

How to Stop a wood burning fire ?

If you don’t have a water source or a retardant material of any type , first of all you should cut the fire’s air using as a cap , dirt , sand or a cover that doesn’t burn , then hit the fire source with a branch and if you can spread the charcoal with a sovel or a stick , in order to stop the “feeding” of the fire .

Never use oils , chemicals , or other fluids that you don’t know their characteristics , because you may make things worse and get yourself on danger .

How to Reduce wood burning ?

You should stop or control – adjust the feeding of the fire immediately , then redure the airflow with every safe way you can , spread a little the charcoal and of course if you have water or any retardant you should use it accordingly to your reducing purposes .

How do you Burn wood to make it fireproof ?

You can use the very famous Shou Sugi Ban Japanese ( and not only ) technique , to make your wood very resistant to fire and not totally fireproof , because the controlled burning – carbonization of wood for some milimeters in its surface , makes it very durable to a new starting fire .

The compelte Shou Sugi Ban method , more detailed in HERE .

Does Baking Soda , stop fire ?

No it cannot stop your wood from fire , even if in some cases of fires caused from oils and greases , it can reduce a little the expansion of fire , but not in a very high level and not for along time period .

How can i Make wood fireproof ?

There is no way you can make your wood 100% fireproof and there is no material – chemical to make your wood 100% fireproof , but there are some elements and methods that can make it very resistant and provide more time , before the total vanish of your wood .

Can you Treat wood , to make it fireproof ?

Yes , you can treat your wood to make it very durable to fire , with bigger lifetime till its total disaster giving you time to save it , but there is no way to make your wood 100% fireproof .

How to make timber fire Resistant ?

Some of the most effective ways to make your wood resistant is the Shou Sugi Ban technique , the wide range of fire resistant retardants and paints , some specialized chemicals and the impregnation method and the choice of a wood type that is fire resistant naturally .

What can you put on wood to Keep it from burning ?

The several modern and very effective heat and fire resistant paints , the Shou Sugi Ban method , several chamicals and of course the covering of your wooden surface with mud – clay , if this is possible .

Does Paint make fireproof ?

Yes , the appropriate paint can make wood very resistant to fire , but not 100% fireproof and of course only the specialized for fire paints and not the common oil based , water based or whatever else you can find in the stores .

Can i Make wood fireproof ?

No you cannot make wood 100% totally fireproof and shield it perfectly against the fire factor , you can only protect it for a longer time in order to save it and make it more resistant to fire and heat .

Does fireproof wood , Exist ?

No there isn’t , no matter what elenent you choose to cover it and protect it , or what method you’ll apply to save it , the only thing you can achieve is to make it more resistant than wood piece with zero protection at all .

Impregnation protects our woodworking projects .

We can protect our wood of any kind (logs , boards , et.c) with the impregnation method and the results will be very impressive . If you ingrain your wood with the appropriate chemicals you can protect it very effectively .

Using chemicals and ingraining your wood piece you can slow down very much the fire spread . Of course you cannot make your wood totally unburned . The wood will have damage from fire , but not as much as if it hadn’t impregrated at all .

The impregnation makes the spread of the fire very slow and if we are lucky , we can restrict the damage in a very high grade .

What chemicals we use for the impregnation ?

The best chemicals for your impregnation are the salts . The salts can make your wood unburned and the most common and best salt is the ammonium phosphate .

The high temperature of the fire spreads the ammonium phosphate in 2 gas elements , nitrogen and ammonia vappors . These 2 gases have the ability to extinguish the fire around the wood , and slow very much , its spreading .

Another protective factor is that the remaining acids are making a “cover” in the wood surface , protecting it extra .

That’s why in a ingrained burning wood , you see its surface being black from fire and the wood being charred from the inside from the fire’s temperature , but you don’t see flames .

It’s the acids cover up . The wood is on fire very slowly from the inside because the chemical gases , and the outside is black from the acid’s cover up .

The wood piece will be destroyed if you won’t hurry up and extinguish the fire completely with water , but in many cases , you’ll able to restrict the damage .

In the log houses , which all the wood logs and pieces are ingrained , universities have made fire tests and the results were very impressive . From wall to wall the fire needed more than an hour to spread and in some case , more than hours .

If you make it and you choose a very good impreganted wood piece , from the market and the places which are doing the process , the danger of your wood plan being in fire danger , will be very low .

It’s very important the impregnation process to be done by professionals , so the chemical salts go to the entire wood log or piece .

I’ve written a complete article for impregnation , see it in HERE .

The old days , the impregnation was very difficult to be perfect and let the wood piece in the chemical salts , for many days and weeks , trying to impregnate the wood as better as they could and as you can imagine many times mistakes were made .

Impregnation has disadvantages .

The most serious disadvantage of the ammonium phosphate is that its resistance to fire isn’t “immortal” and it “flushed” from water with kind of easiness .

If you want to make a wood plan which requires fire resistance as roofs , balconies , outdoor furniture , you can achieve great fire resistance if you supply your wood from the market , as complete impregnated and of course you should be careful concerning the place you are about to do this supply .
