In the carpentry activity – hobby we act with wood , by shaping it and making the woodworking projects we want or need , eventually . Of course to do all these simple or more complex “jobs” we need wood machinery , to help us and the hand drills along with the braces and bits , are necessary .

The hand drill consists from a brace , which is a metalic rod shaped to be hand holded in order to be manual moved circulary and it’s attached to a metalic bit , which is a metalic cutting rod , being screw shaped , so it can penetrate – drill while it moved by the brace , into a wooden surface .

Using a hand drill , a brace , et.c you and only you have the complete control of the drilling process and you can stop and move on , with every drilling “speed” you judge is the appropriate for the hole you want to create .

Between you and your hole you have the less possible “interference” . Your hands mechanically are creating the hole , with “surgical” speed and movements if you like .

Using a hand drill – brace , you can create a hole controlling the hole’s depth , in a tiny millimeter scale .

And this is very useful , especially when you woodworking with expensive wood and you need the best drilling performance possible . Of course all this has a deep satisfaction and it’s joyful .

How many Types , i need to drill any hole i want in wood ?

Many different hole types , need many different drill types , but not as many to be “afraid” of . Let’s see :

1) Have a Hand Brace & some Brace Bits .

For your joinery purposes ( and more ) you’ll need to make several holes and a hand brace combined with several sized bits , will make your every drilling “mission” possible .

The hand braces aren’t expensive wood machiner , except if you search to buy a vintage – rare style one .

2) Have an Egg Beater style hand drill .

This is a very useful drill type of machinery to drill holes with huge accuracy , because it lets you drill with the exact speed and movements you want . It’s the “incarnation” of the precise manual( and not only) drilling .

They’re mostly antique wood tools but they’re very popular , cause of this accurate “luxury” they give to do whatever you want , concerning the drilling .

They move by a gear “philosophized” mechanism and this allows you to use whatever drilling speed you like , with maximum comfort . Just have these gears well cleaned and lubricated and your drilling will be awesome .

3) Have a T – handle Auger drill .

I know that you’ve seen this T – handled auger drill in many case and youtube videos in which the carpentr use it to make larger holes for several purposes .

These holes you cannot do with a hand braces and bits , because they have limitations and they’se focused in smaller holes . So in here the T – handle auger drill is doing the job with easiness .

4) Have many Auger bits – Drill bits and some sharpening Files .

For your braces and your egg beater drill , you’ll need to have as many as you can of auger bits and drill bits . The auger bits are do inside your braces to drill holes and the drill bits are go inside your egg beater drill .

The drill bits for your egg beater , look like the power drill bits and they have straight “body” to fit inside your egg beater .

Your drilling machinery will need some adjustments ( shaping the bits edges , et.c ) and sharpening from time to time and some files are needed in here .

You’ll use your files also to shape – reshape and make small adjustments to the holes you’ll make , in order to trimming them and make them perfect , for your dowels , et.c .
