Why this Poplar Tree “died” and the others near it , did not ? ( + video . )

Why this poplar tree “died” and the other ones SO CLOSE to it didn’t , came to my mind spontaneously and with the “speed of light” , when i saw this view . As i have told you million times( ok no millions but many ) , the woodworking “planet” is an “alive” planet .

In our wood astonishing hobby and way of life , you see every day , every moment , so many “strange” things . In our wood activity , it’s certain that the more you act with wood , the more you’ll learn COMPLETELY new knowledge .

The Woodworking “Planet” hides so many Mysteries .

Sometimes you’ll see things that you won’t be able to give an explanation , even if you’ll try so hard for answers . Yes our wood “planet” is a “magical” one , that’s why we LOVE it so much .

So let me tell you about a very STRANGE “thing” i saw in one of my walks here in Greece , in one of our Northern parks . I live near our National Olympic Stadium , in Athens . Here , in the northern area of Athens , we have a very big and beautiful park with many , many trees .

The majority of the trees are pine tree and poplar ones . These trees don’t need much attention ( watering – pruning ..et.c ) from the city hall autorities , and they are very beautiful also . The pine trees also , have a very importand PROPERTY , i think that i’ve told before , but let me say it again .

Pine Trees are Very Good Air Filters .

The pine trees , with their needles as leaves , they are excellent AIR FILTERS . The pine trees are making the air cleaner , filtering the city’s polution and the other bad to breath elements .

Notice that all the HOSPITALS , “specialized” in the respiratory field , they have in their outside areas , pine trees . Many pine trees . They make , air way better and this is very good .

So in this park near to my home in Athens , i like to make big walks for relaxation and soul “control and psychotherapy. Many more citizens of course , do that in daily basis . In one of my recent walks and ion the area the park has many poplar trees , i saw something very strange .

What was that ?

One Poplar Tree “dead” , and the Others “Alive” .

Only ONE poplar tree TOTALLY dried and “dead” , between other poplar trees , TOTALLY healthy and “alive” . The distance between the “dead” poplar tree , from the others was only a couple of feet . Around 50 feet or so .

In the photos i’ll upload for you , which i took with my smartphone , you’ll see that the distance is very close . I tried to see and understand , WHY this poplar tree “died” and the others are healthy and OK , and till today i haven’t got a 100% solid answer .

I asked some of my friend agriculturists and the answers i took were “mixed” . All of them they said to me that maybe it was the quality of the soil and its elements , that made the poplar tree “die” .

But i asked them , WHY THE OTHERS so close to it , didn’t have any issue ? Their answers ( drinking some coffee trying to solve this wood “puzzle” ) , were still “mixed” and not 100% certain , either .

So many Wood factors , So many posibilities .

They said to me that maybe it was the combination of the soil , the sun light , the moisture , the water from the rain , the micro-chemistry of the tree and its inside elements and other tree and wood properties .

The poplar tree didn’t have any bug issues , as i ‘ve seen from my self by taking close eyesights to it and seeing underneath its peel . As long as the poplar tree was inside the ground , i couldn’t see more from it . It was COMPLETELY dry and it didn’t have any signs of fluids and life .

I touched some of its lower branches and they get cut so easily . Complete dryness . So the days were passing and my wood questions were still in my mind . I needed to find more accurate answers , for myself and yes for you(!!) , my friends here in the www.woodhappiness.com .

These questions became more intense , after the insidents we had here in Athens a couple of days before . A small size tornado “knocked” Athens causing some problems . Many trees were removed from the tornado and many cars were destroyed from them .

I wanted to see if the “dead” poplar tree manage to survive from the tornado and i run to it . As i’ve imagined the tornado , removed it completely and the authorites went to cut it . That was my time to get closer and see what was inside the log , the condition of the roots , if it had bugs inside and i general to “inspect” it .

The Tornado wasn’t good with the Poplar Tree .

And that i did . I went the same day , after the tornando to see the tree and see if i can make put out some results about the tree’s death . The municipal workers to cut the tree wasn’t there and i had all the time to see the tree without any distraction .

What i saw ?

Some very interesting “things” . The outside of the tree was completely dry , but the inside had fluids and it was “alive” . It was wet from the wood fluids and the tree moisture inside its core , but the outside of the tree in all of its length was dry .

You could remove its peel so easily and it seemed that the inside would be in the same state . As you’ll see in the youtube video , i’ll upload from the www.woodhappiness.com youtube channel , you’ll see that the tree , is in very good condition , inside it .

It had nice wood “waters” and its branches were very “alive” and fresh . Of course the municipality “guys” cut it the next day , in smaller logs and i choose to make the video , after the tree’s cut , so you can see , how nice the poplar tree was .

Its roots was OK and with zero bugs and infections , as the whole tree is . It has no bugs to “eat” it and “kill” it from the inside and its “heart” is in very good condition . Yes it has some tiny wooden cracks , but it’s a normal thing .

Dried Outside , Fresh and in Good Condition from the Inside .

I shooted some photos ( SORRY i’ll have some issues uploading them – i’ll fix it ) , to see the poplar from the very close , i dug a little the soil to see if it had soil worms and it was so “clean” .

I scratched so many times my head(!) trying to understand , WHY the poplar tree died and till now i haven’t any 100% certain point of view . Of course i’ve asked some of my friend agriculturists and some of my village , very experienced woodworkers and carpenders , but they didn’t have any certainty , either .

A tree can “die” from so many different factors and the random combination of these factors . This situation has made me very curious and of ocurse i’ll keep searching , for the reasons of the poplar’s drying and “death” . Whatever more information i’ll find , i’ll share it with you , OF COURSE .

Don’t stop “to supply” yourself with happiness from the woodworking activity and becoming better and better every single day .
